With the global travel situation over the past two years, we are glad to finnaly be able to put together a list of the most exciting events scheduled until the end of the year, and mark them in our calendars! These are the top events worth traveling for in 2022:
29 January – 15 May: Yves Saint Laurent aux Musées, Paris, France
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Yves Saint Laurent’s first runway show, six major Parisian museums are staging a simultaneous exhibition to honour the iconic fashion designer. Each institution will display YSL creations alongside artwork from their collections, highlighting how the designer was influenced by artists like Matisse and Picasso, and looking at wider links between fashion and art.
March: Monarch butterfly migration, Mexico, Biosphere Reserve, Michoacán
This forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and sections of it can be visited all month to witness orange-and-black swathes of these beautiful creatures in their toasty winter habitat, resting amongst trees and darting through the air.
27 March: 94th Oscars ceremony, Dolby Theatre Hollywood, Los Angeles
10 April: French presidential election
The 2022 French presidential election will be held in two rounds — the first on 10 April and the second on 24 April, if no one wins a majority in the first round.
14 April – 9 October: Floriade Expo, Amsterdam
Floriade is a world horticultural exhibition that takes place in the Netherlands only once a decade. Dutch horticulture brings the theme ‘Growing Green Cities’ to life in collaboration with national and international participants at the Expo. Be amazed at the Expo by all kinds of green innovations make cities more fun, liveable and sustainable.
15 – 17, 22 – 25 April: Coachella, Indio, California
Who’s performing: Ye, Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, Megan Thee Stallion, 21 Savage, and more.
7 – 15 May: Edinburgh International Children’s Festival, Scotland
This expertly curated festival with 30 years under its belt handpicks children’s theatre and dance shows from around the world. The resulting programme features diverse performances for all ages – from toddlers right the way up to teenagers – including intelligently presented shows for the older audiences.
9 May: Philippines general election
12 – 22 May: Berlin Design Week, Germany
Exhibitions, tours, open studios, parties and business speed dating are offered in the programme, which will appeal to artists, creatives and anyone with an eye for aesthetics. But the event is more than just a visual feast, and will explore how design can address sustainability and societal challenges through its 2022 theme, ‘higher purpose’.
22 May – 5 June: French Open, Paris
Barbora Krejčíková of the Czech Republic won her maiden Grand Slam when she beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia in the women’s singles final at the 2021 French Open. In the men’s singles 2021, Djokovic defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece to become the first male player in the Open Era to win all four Grand Slams twice.
26 – 30 May: Monaco Grand Prix F1
The Monaco Grand Prix is the marquee event on the F1 calendar and an absolute dream sports travel experience, whether you’re a fan of auto racing or not. To get the full experience, there’s no better time to visit Monaco with its rugged coastline, blue Mediterranean waters, incredible restaurants, and of course, the glamour and sophistication of Monte Carlo.
3 – 5 June: SAGA Festival, Bucharest
At SAGA Festival, you will discover your own interests. Your horizon will became broader and the music will transform you into another dimension. With more than 100+ artists, the music will make the biggest party Bucharest has ever seen!
4 – 26 June: Carnaval de Tenerife
Tenerife Carnival is second only to Rio di Janeiro! It is famous all over the world for its colorful and vibrant celebrations and parties. Every year more than 250,000 people head to Tenerife to the gorgeous capital city of Santa Cruz to celebrate carnival!
10 June – 6 August: Summer Fest, Rome, Italy
The Roma Summer Fest is two months of live concerts with the greatest Italian and international stars of rock and pop held at the amazing Auditorium Parco della Musica.
24 – 26 June: Pride Toronto, Canada
Toronto’s Pride is one of the largest in the world, meaning lots is going on throughout June leading up to the main parade, Trans March and Dyke March – plus music and parties galore – at the festival weekend (24-26 June). Performers include dancehall artist Spice and former RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Symone, and there’s a welcome sustainability gesture in the event’s banning of flatbed floats and petrol vehicles in parades.
27 June – 10 July: The Wimbledon, UK
At the 2021 edition, Djokovic created history by becoming the third male player after Roger Federer and Nadal to win 20 Grand Slams. On the other hand, Ashleigh Barty will try to defend her championship victory from 2021 at the 2022 edition of the tournament. For the first time in its history, Wimbledon will not have a Middle Sunday — a traditional day off between the first and second weeks of the tournament.
1 – 3 July: Afro Nation Portugal, Portimão, Praia da Rocha
Afro Nation brings star-studded lineups covering dancehall, bashment, Afrobeats, hip-hop and R&B to occupy Praia da Rocha’s blissful beach for a weekend of pure heat, both in temperature and vibe.
1 – 16 July: Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland
The 2022 line-up is still under wraps, but considering Montreux has hosted everyone from Nina Simone to David Bowie to Kendrick Lamar over the years. There are also free programmes (concerts, pool parties, star-studded jam sessions) and the dreamy Lake Geneva location to enjoy.
6 – 15 July: Fiesta de San Fermín, Pamplona, Spain
The Fiestas de San Fermín are best known for their closing – the infamous Running of the Bulls. Like all carnivals around the world, the Sanfermines are a mix of music, dance and ancient traditions kept alive by passionate citizens.
13-18 July: Golf British Open, Scotland
This historic tournament will celebrate its 150th anniversary at the birthplace of golf: The Old Course in St Andrews. In addition to the golf, this event provides the perfect excuse to experience an authentic Scottish vacation with classic authentic accommodations, scenic hikes, historic castles.
22 – 24 & 29 – 31 July: Tomorrowland, Broom, Belgium
Tomorrowland is, simply put, the biggest electronic music show on earth. Massive lineups cherry-picked from any artist they could want, allied to an intense attention to detail, create an unrivalled wonderland that keeps on mesmerising the world.
28 – 31 July: Cambridge Folk Festival, England
One of the longest-running folk festivals in the world! You’ll hear more than ‘just’ folk music – blues, soul, jazz, and other global sounds. Acts for 2022: Seasick Steve, Suzanne Vega, Chico Trujillo and heralded guitarist Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram and more.
28 July – 8 August: 2022 Commonwealth Games, Bimingham, UK
For the first time in its history, the Commonwealth Games will have more medal events for women than men. There are 72 countries that are part of the CGF.
August: The Great Migration, Maasai Mara, Kenya
The Great Migration – when over 1.5 million wildebeest (plus zebras and antelopes) make their way from the Serengeti in Tanzania to Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Choose a safari and enjoy this natural miracle.
4 – 7 August: UNTOLD Festival, Cluj-Napoca, Romania
Untold Festival is the largest electronic music festival held in Romania, taking place in Cluj-Napoca at the Cluj Arena. It is held annually and has been designated Best Major Festival in the European Festival Awards 2015. Guests come from a vast range of European countries, as well as Asia and North America. 2022 Theme is Temple of Luna and the first wave of artists announced are: David Guetta, Above & Beyond, Anne-Marie, Don Diablo, G-Eazy, Kygo, Major Lazer Soundsystem, Morten, Oliver Heldens, Tujamo, Paul Kalkbrenner.
11 – 21 August: World Surf League, Tahiti, French Polynesia
Every year, the small village of Teahupo’o is the setting for one of the World Surf League’s most thrilling championship events, on both the men and women’s tours.
25 – 28 August: Seoul POPCON, South Korea
omic-Con will transform into Seoul POPCON (Pop Culture Convention) for 2022, broadening its remit to represent gaming, NFTs, metaverses, animation, film and music – as well as comics, of course.
29 August – 11 September: US Open, New York
The attention in the US Open will be on defending champion Emma Raducanu, who took the world by storm by becoming one of the youngest winners of a Grand Slam tournament in 2021.
10-25 September: 2022 Asian Games, China
Officially known as the XIX Asiad, the mega sporting event will be held in Hangzhou, China. There will be 40 sports with 482 events across 61 disciplines. For the first time, players from Australia and other Oceania countries will participate in Asian Games. These include basketball, association football, volleyball and fencing.
21 – 25 September: La Mercè Festival, Barcelona, Spain
To this day, La Merce is the best opportunity to experience Catalan cultural and traditions, including masked devils run through the streets lighting and throwing fireworks, a traditional circle dance, a parade of giant papier-mache figures through the streets, the giant human pyramids built in the streets and topped with a child, which have even been named a UNESCO Cultural heritage spectacle.
2, 9, 16, 23, 30 October: Ottobrata Zafferanese, Catania, Sicily, Italy
For over 40 years the village of Zafferana Etnea, near Mount Etna, has hosted gastronomic gatherings every Sunday in October to trade and champion regional produce – porcini mushrooms, pistachios, chestnuts, olive oil, grapes, mustard and wine – each Sunday highlights different items.
24 October: Festival of Lights – Diwali, Jaipur, India
November: Opening of Grand Egyptian Museum
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), also know as the Giza Museum, opening was post-poned bcause of Covid and is now scheduled to open in November 2022. It will be the largest archaeological museum in the world.
5 – 19 November: Somerset County Guy Fawkes Carnivals, England
Beginning in Bridgwater, each carnival features elaborately decorated, illuminated ‘carts’ (similar to carnival floats), some up to 100 feet in length, plus bonfires, fireworks and other festivities.
12 November – 18 December: 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar
The opening match will be played at the Al Bayt Stadium, inaugurated in 2021.
December: Hong Kong Winter Fest
Victoria Harbour and the surrounding areas hold the richest concentration of illuminations, tinsel, artificial snow and twinkling fairy lights, making it the ideal way to get your holly jolly fix, on Christmas.
